The 2006 Presidential election in Belarus was as close as President Lukashenka has come to being toppled. Wives and Widows, of assasinated and imprisoned opposition leaders, led protests by over 10,000 opposition supporters. The request for a re-count was denied and hundreds were arrested and imprisoned, including the leader Aleksander Kazulin, who was sentenced to 6 years. He was released on bail in 2009.
